Who will be the best MLB pitcher in 2023? Here are updated rankings (as of May 17):
MLB Pitcher Rankings for 2023
1. Sonny Gray – Twins
It’s been an excellent start to the season for Sonny Gray. The Minnesota Twins starting pitcher isn’t considered a bonafide ace, but he’s performed like it early, posting the best numbers of any starter in the league. Gray has a 4-0 record through eight starts while posting a stunning 1.39 ERA and 56 punchouts.
2. Gerrit Cole – Yankees
Gerrit Cole is often an afterthought in these conversations but brings excellent stuff every fifth day to the New York Yankees. He’s continued to be consistent for the Bronx Bombers, registering a 5-0 record with a 2.22 ERA and 62 strikeouts.
3. Eduardo Rodriguez – Tigers
The Detroit Tigers signed Eduardo Rodriguez to be part of the top half of their rotation. He’s performed better than that in 2023, where he’s off to a tremendous start. The Tigers lefty is right up there with some of the league’s best regarding his overall numbers. He has a 4-2 record over eight starts, compiling a 1.57 ERA and 47 strikeouts.
4. Justin Steele – Cubs
Chicago Cubs left-hander Justin Steele is putting together an elite stretch to kick off the campaign. His last time out wasn’t perfect, but that shouldn’t discredit his great start. Steele has a 6-1 record with a 2.44 ERA and 47 strikeouts.
5. Bryce Elder – Braves
This might not be a name you’re familiar with, but Bryce Elder has emerged as a high-end starter. Elder has continued to trot out to the bump for the Braves and put forth quality outings. He has a 3-0 record with a 1.94 ERA and 39 strikeouts. The Braves right-hander has the potential to make noise moving forward in the National League.
